EntertainmentSerena SonomaSaturday Night Live rang in its 45th season Saturday night with host Woody Harrelson and musical guest Billie Eilish, but all eyes were on new cast member Bowen Yang who made his historic debut as the first East Asian member of the show’s cast. Over the span of the night, the gay comedian impersonated Kim Jong-un and presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
As a member of the cast, Yang, who previously was a writer for the show, contributing to skits like that infamous gay porn parody, was slotted into the opening reel. In it, he appears for a few seconds at The Vessel in Hudson Yards.
For his first on camera skit, Yang opens as North Korean dictator, Kim Jung-un.
"I need some advice," Alec Baldwin's Trump asks "How do you handle a whistleblower?"
"Oh, that's easy. You have big ocean in your country?" the North Korean dictator replies. "Okay, send whistleblower to the bottom of there."
Yang is the first Chinese-American performer for the show, and the third openly gay cast member following Terry Sweeney and John Milhiser.
Later in the show the comedian plays Andrew Yang in a “DNC Town Hall” sketch which features Colin Jost as Pete Buttigieg, Kate McKinnon as Elizabeth Warren, and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris.
“If you think my candidacy is going well, I’m literally giving free money to people and I’m still in sixth place,” Yang quips as Yang.
After the skit aired, the presidential candidate tweeted about it. “Great to see Bowen Yang as me on SNL!” he wrote. Hours later, on Sunday morning, he had more thoughts.
“Tip to the SNL writers — you should work on some new lines for Bowen Yange because I’ll be here all through 2020.” The candidate also linked stories from The Onion as inspiration.
