The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons and Riverdale creator Greg Berlanti, both Hollywood power gays, are coming together to create a new show all about queer history. Equal will run as a four-part documentary series on HBO’s streaming service, HBO Max, illuminating important moments in LGBTQ+ history and the fight for equality.

According to Daily Mail, the series will focus on the stories of Radical Faeries founder Harry Hay, lesbian civil rights organization The Daughters of Bilitis, trans pioneer Christine Jorgensen, and black queer activist Bayard Rustin. The series will culminate with the story of the Stonewall Riots and the first Pride. The show will feature dramatic reenactments as well as previously unseen footage.

“In June, we commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which shepherded in a new era for LGBTQ+ pride,” HBO Max’s EVP of Original Non-fiction and Kids Programming told Daily Mail. “While we know the story behind that fateful summer night, there’s a lot of fascinating, untold history of the patriots, artists, and thinkers who paved the way...It’s time to share their heroic tales, and we could not have more perfect partners in Jim Parsons, Greg Berlanti, Jon Jashni and Scout to introduce our HBO Max audience to these historical trailblazers.”

Parsons is best known for his role on The Big Bang Theory, for which he’s won four Emmys. Berlanti is one of TV’s most prolific producers, creating Dawson’s Creek, Everwood, You, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In 2018, he signed a $400 million overall extension deal with Warner Bros., which owns HBO. His 2018 film Love, Simon is also being extended into a television show.
