Disney Plus wants all of your money.
halloweenTre'vell AndersonDisney Plus won’t take its heel off all these other streaming platforms’ necks — and it hasn’t even debuted yet! The House of Mouse is rolling out programming to be found on its platform and to many, the company just made its biggest announcement to date: A Hocus Pocus sequel is finally happening!
According to an exclusive report from the entertainment news site Collider, Hocus Pocus 2 is in the works with Workaholics writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo on board to pen the script. Sources tell the publication that she’s responsible for crafting a tale that will entice original cast members Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and the not-talked-about-enough Kathy Najimy to return. None are currently attached to the project, but the studio is hoping to have them involved in some capacity.
The original Hocus Pocus was a dud when it hit theaters in 1993 but went on to become a cult classic and a Halloween staple through subsequent DVD releases and frequent airtime on the Disney Channel. The new incarnation will only be available on Disney’s new streaming platform, which bows Nov. 12, and is still in the earliest stages of development. That means we have literally no information on where they will take the story.
This isn’t the first time, however, that Disney has attempted to get a sequel to Hocus Pocus off the ground. The original film’s screenwriter, Mick Garris, claimed back in 2017 that a follow-up was being developed, but then it turned out to be a novelized version (which did at least feature a lesbian romance subplot).
Hocus Pocus’ stars have continued to express their interest in a sequel over the years, with Parker saying she would “love” the chance to return and Midler calling it one of her favorite movies she’s starred in.
But while we wait for more details, Disney Plus will certainly keep us busy. Literally every Disney property you once loved — from TheCheetah Girls franchise (even the third one nobody watches because Raven-Symoné wasn’t in it) and all things Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century to Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, and everything in between — will be available on the service.
And all for the low price of $6.99 a month. We love to see it!
