The Emmy-nominated actress will star in her first series regular role since wrapping up Orange is the New Black.
TelevisionSerena SonomaLaverne Cox has been cast in one of Shonda Rhimes’ first Netflix original dramas, Inventing Anna, along with five other stars.
The upcoming show is based on the New York Magazine feature “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People,” written by Jessica Pressler who also serves as a producer for the series.
Inventing Anna will follow a journalist named Vivian (portrayed by Anna Chlumsky) who investigates the case of a Russian named Anna Sorokin (Julia Garner) woman who created the fictitious identity of Anna Delvey, a German heiress and conned Manhattan socialites out of thousands of dollars. In 2019, the real-life Sorokin was convicted of multiple counts of attempted grand larceny, theft of services, and larceny. She is currently incarcerated at Albion Correctional Facility in Albion, New York.
Cox will play the role of Kacy Duke, who is a celebrity trainer and life coach, according to Shondaland. “Anna's whirlwind went far and wide, and sucked into it was Kacy, a celebrity trainer and life coach who — while centered enough to keep herself out of the real trouble — finds herself becoming a coach to more than just Anna in the wake of her crimes,” the site explains.
The series will be the Emmy-nominated actresses return to television following the end of Orange is the New Black earlier this year. Cox’s OITNB character Sophia Burset was released from prison at the end of season six and only made a few appearances in the series final season.
Cox will star alongside Chlumksy and Garner in addition to Katie Lowes (Scandal), and Alexis Floyd (The Bold Type). Shondaland reports that Oscar and Emmy winning director David Frakel (The Devil Wears Prada) is slated to direct two episodes, including the pilot. Frankel also serves as an executive producer for the 10-episode series.
A premiere date has yet to be announced.
