“It’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors to come back,” explained Ryan Murphy, “because it might be our last season.”
Rose DommuNow that American Horror Story: 1984 has concluded, Ryan Murphy is looking toward the future of the anthology series, but that future might be shorter than expected. In an interview with Deadline, Murphy revealed that the 10th season of the show could be the last.
Murphy is still “keeping mum” on next season’s theme but is hoping to bring some of the show’s most beloved stars back. “We’re working on an idea for season 10 that I think people will love because it’s about reuniting fan-favorite actors to come back — because it might be our last season,” Murphy said, clarifying that the 10th season is the last the show is contracted for.
The producer has been “quietly reaching out to various people,” and so far all of them have said yes. He says it’s “too soon to tell” if Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, or Jessica Lange will return, but that “the people who helped build this show into what it is, who believed in it from the beginning, have been contacted and are interested.”
“So if you look at the iconography of the first three seasons, you can figure who I’ve gone to and who might be coming back,” he added.
Fans have speculated the upcoming season of AHS could be set in space, harkening back to the alien subplot in Asylum, and Murphy acknowledged that it’s been considered.
“We flirted with aliens, we flirted with space, we flirted with some things that were more interesting than others,” he said. “I think that at the heart of it, it’s always about Americana. It would be hard to do something like that idea you mention, not that I wouldn’t. The fans write in what they want, and they’re very excited about the Coven stuff and the aliens in season 2. They’ve always wanted something in space.”
But channeling horror classics like Alien“would be hard because it’s called American Horror Story and you’d have to stay within the legal soil limits in order to make that work.”
Will Season 10 actually be the end ofAmerican Horror Story? Murphy also said in the interview that Season Nine has been their most popular yet, and that the show’s audience continues to grow thanks to YouTube, so a renewal seems likely. It also might be good to end on a high note rather than having the audience sour on the show.
But if Season 10 is the end... Jessica Lange needs to come back. Give the people what they want!
