More sexy, damaged teens in cute makeup are on the way.
Rose DommuKeep your eco-friendly glitter handy, because Euphoria is returning for a second season. The buzzy cable drama about the inner lives, sex lives, and drug habits of some very troubled teens has been renewed by HBO.
The news of Euphoria’s return came during a sneak peek at HBO’s 2020 lineup aired before Sunday night’s Watchmen finale. Euphoria was featured alongside glimpses of Westworld and Succession, confirming that the show will be back next year. There’s no specific release date, but as Euphoria premiered during June this year, it's safe to assume it will return just in time for Pride 2020.
There’s been little doubt that the show would get a second season, despite it ending on something of a cliffhanger rather than neatly wrapping up the various loose threads. Euphoria was everywhere this summer, and has especially resonated with teenage girls and media gays — AKA the people who decide what’s relevant and therefore marketable. The show has since appeared on many best-of-year TV lists, inspired thousands of tweets gushing over Rue (Zendaya) and Jules’ (Hunter Schafer) romance, and launched a beauty movement.
But what will happen in the show’s second season? July’s finale ended with Rue relapsing and potentially succumbing to an overdose, after her girlfriend Jules bailed on her to queer out in the big city in an attempt to escape her blackmail and extortion by Nate (Jacob Elordi), who catfished her on Grindr after she had sex with his dad. And those are just the queer storylines!
When Euphoria does return, we can only hope that it will be even messier and gayer — star Barbie Ferreira has even voiced her hope that her character might explore her sexuality, inspired by her own queerness. When you’ve got sexy, unsupervised teens doing lots of drugs at amusement parks, anything can happen!
