Ever since Frozen debuted, the internet has been hankering for Elsa to come out as gay. Not only for her to come out, but for her to also to get a Disney fairy tale ending complete with a girlfriend. There was a whole hashtag campaign called #GiveElsaAGirlfriend that even Idina Menzel (the voice of the character) supported.
But true to form Disney dashed those hopes— dashing queer dreams is one of their favorite things if you haven’t heard.
“That's not a story that we wanted to tell at this point in time,” Frozen 2 songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez said of the sequel. We hate to see it.
Late last year the whispers started back up: Frozen 3 is in the works and so is Elsa’s lesbian love life. Not only is the blonde supposed to come out, but she’s supposed to have a girlfriend. That said, that’s only if it ever happens!
There’s been no announcements that another installment is in the works — in fact, only the contrary — and so it’s really not een a possibility until 2025. But, the people pleasers that they are, Saturday Night Live has stepped in and given us what Disney won’t.
In a new live-action sketch, the comedy show mocks up a few “deleted scenes” from Frozen 2. They pick fun at the film’s plot, its attempt to be racially inclusive, and finally the fact that Elsa has no love interest.
“Elsa, it’s ok you see,” Anna, played by Cecily Strong, sings to her in a "Let it Go" flip. “We all know, we all know, we’ve all known since you were a tween. When you dressed at Brienne of Tarth on three separate Halloweens. I don’t care, what Disney says the Twitter storm rages on!”
“The lack of romantic interest doesn’t bother me any way,” Elsa, played by Kate McKinnon, finishes.
Ok, well it bothers us!
