We love to see it.
Last year Special, the short and scrappy Netflix series created by and starring Ryan O'Connell, delved out a small place in our hearts. It's 15-minute episodes were unpretentious, pretty freaking funny, and addicting. They were also heartwarming to say the least. And clearly Netflix liked what was happening as the streamer commissioned a second season and made it possible for O'Connell (who wrote the entire first season by himself) to build out a writer's room. Then the pandemic happened.
Earlier this year, O'Connell revealed that before everything had shut down four episodes were already filmed of the season's eight episodes. While in quarantine, the star was actually helping to edit them a bit. And while he wasn't sure at the time when production on the reason of the season would start back up again, now that time has come.
"Back to work with my boys," O'Connell wrote in an Instagram post. In it he hashtagged Special season 2. In it, he appears seemingly dressed for a 1980s prom. In a repost of the photos, filmmaker Craig Johnson captioned it with "Prom date." Johnson's ImDB doesn't credit him as having worked on the first season of Special (he does have credits for an episode of Looking, as well as projects like Love Life, Alex Strangelove, and The Skeleton Twins) but maybe he's directing episodes for season two.
Netflix also confirmed the news with a post of its own.
"Some very SPECIAL news," the Most social account posted. "Season 2 is in production."
Previously, O'Connell has made some promises about the season. Namely, more sex.
"I think anything that still has a stigma attached to it just naturally excites me,"he told Entertainment Weekly. "I think there shouldn't be any of that, especially with gay sex. I've had to suffer through so many straight sex scenes and now everyone else has to pay." As a result, fans can expect "a lot more gay sex" in upcoming episodes. Also, there is set to be some more visibility for disabled people. O'Connell revealed in an interview with T Magazine that while filming for season two, new disabled actors on set found they couldn't get their hai rand makeup done as the trailers weren't accessible.
There's no word on when we should expect the season to drop.
