In September Schitt's Creek made history when it swept the comedy categories at the Emmy Awards. And since, interest has apparently been reignited in the six-season series. According to Nielsen ratings, the series was the top streamed show between September 8 and October 4 with 968 minutes reported Deadline.
Likely streamed mostly on Netflix, the bump came before Netflix made the final season available in the U.S. We can only surprise that this will cause the numbers to sustain more or less in the next report.
To ascend to the top slot the comedy beat out Ryan Murphy's Ratched which had blown past others for the top spot previously. That series, with its leads Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon, is still hanging on at number five with 791 million viewers. It is notably the only new show in the top five, which is rounded out with series like The Office, The Blacklist, and Grey's Anatomy. All of these series are available on Netflix. In fact, all of the top 10 are available on Netflix except for The Boys, which is an Amazon original coming in at number seven.
Dan Levy, creator, writer, and star of Schitt's Creek, responded to the news with a simple head exploding emoji. Previously, he has pointed to the fact that in another studio's hands, Schitt's would have likely been canceled after its first season due to ratings but Pop gave the show enough tarmac for it to take off and truly soar.
