They really are following the America's Next Top Model blueprint.
Mikelle StreetIf you thought that this year you didn't have enough Drag Race, you're in luck. After having the most season the franchise has ever had in a year, World of Wonder is expanding the Drag Race-universe with another European iteration.
Over a decade ago, RuPaul's Drag Race began as a small American series on a niche network. It was admittedly a combination between then-popular shows Project Runway and America's Next Top Model. In the decade since, it's pursued the blueprint of those shows relentlessly iterating spinoffs — All Stars and Drag U — specials, and a global family of international franchises. This year, Canada's Drag Race and Drag Race Holland joined existing shows RuPaul's Drag Race U.K., The Switch, and Drag Race Thailand in this now global empire — the latter has seemingly been canceled. But 2021 will bring Drag Race Spain.
"It is such an honor to welcome Spain to the Drag Race family, partner with Atres, and bring the fierce fabulous glamour of Spanish queens to new audiences around the world on WOW Presents Plus," Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, World of Wonder co-founders, said in a statement. “In these dark and challenging times we believe people need Drag Race's joy, laughter, and heart now more than ever."
Like many of the other Drag Race-named franchises (as opposed to those named RuPaul's Drag Race) the series isn't expected to include RuPaul in-person. Instead, someone known more to Spaniards will slot in as host (or maybe a few people as in the case with Canada's Drag Race) with a full judging panel to be built out from there.
In the U.S., viewers will be able to view the show on WOW Presents Plus. An air date has not been announced.
