“The journey is not over, but it’s definitely going in the right direction."
netflixTelevisionMey RudeBridgerton is one of the hottest shows of the year, and it’s in no small part to the iconic and powerful Queen Charlotte.
Golda Rosheuvel has been one of our favorite monarchs this year, playing the queen on the hit Netflix period drama. And she’s more than aware of how important the role is.
In an interview with Page Six, Rosheuvel talked about what an honor and privilege it’s been to play a queen on a hit series especially as a Black woman and a queer woman. “For a long time now, stories had been told by the privileged, and I think it’s time that the door has opened,” she told the site.
Rosheuvel specifically mentioned Shonda Rhimes, Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and Ryan Coogler as some of the Black creators who are opening doors for people of color in Hollywood. Rhimes is the creator of Bridgerton.
“Then to be able to create the space where you can have a Black queen in the highest-watched period drama on Netflix,” she continued, “you can have that to be able to break down the boundaries to make the space for Black and Brown people to be in a lavish, sexy, scandalous, beautiful representation of life.”
She knows that it’s not just incredible to see a Black woman as the queen on a show like this, but for a gay Black woman to be playing her. “There’s not a lot of us around who are gay, female, Black, and I’m very privileged and blessed to be one of them,” she said. “I’m a small voice in that community, but I think each of us who has a small voice creates something big and something wonderful for the next generation to see themselves and be proud of… I’m very proud of who I am.”
“The journey is not over, but it’s definitely going in the right direction,” she said.
