There’s a new Bruja coming to Charmed, and this one is trans.

Actress Mareya Salazar is joining the cast of the CW’s reboot of their popular series about sister witches for the ongoing third season.

Salazar will play Joséfina, a second cousin of the Charmed Ones, the three main witches on the show. According to Deadline, the character is “a strong, opinionated young woman who shows up on their doorstep with surprises and secrets. She also has a mission of her own.” The role will be recurring.

Salazar is a Venezuelan-Canadian actress making her first foray into television with this role. She was previously in the Dutch romantic comedy Verliefd Op Cuba.

Salazar isn't the first trans actor to join the series. Trans masculine actor JJ Hawkins became the first trans actor to be on the reboot of the popular series when he joined at the beginning of season three. He plays Kevin, a transgender college student who provides some much needed inspiration to one of the Charmed Ones before she faces off against a difficult foe.

Charmed is a reboot of the popular series about three sister witches who are marked as “Charmed Ones,” and must use their powers to fight against evil. The original series starred Shannon Doherty, Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan. In the reboot, the sisters are Latinas, and played by Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery.

Diaz’s character Mel is a lesbian, already adding much needed LGBTQ+ representation to the series. Now with Hawkins and Salazar, the show gets even more diverse.

Last year, Zoey Luna, another trans Latina actress played a teen witch in the sequel to The Craft. She played Lourdes, one of the four witches that form a coven in the movie. When the role was first announced, the character’s “super-Catholic mother threw her out for being trans and she now lives with her 80 year old abuela, who has taught Lourdes a variety of supernatural practices.”

The casting was announced yesterday, timed with Trans Day of Visibility. Apart from Pose, there are very few recurring or regular roles for trans actresses of color on television and we can’t wait to see Salazar join those ranks.
