The When They See Us star just joined the cast of Gloria Calderón Kellett’s With Love.
CelebstransMey RudeWhen They See Us star Isis King just booked her next big project after being cast in With Love, a new romantic comedy series coming to Amazon!
With Love follows the Diaz siblings, Lily and Jorge, played by Emeraude Tobia and Mark Indelicato, "who are on a mission to find love and purpose" as they "cross paths with seemingly unrelated residents during some of the most heightened days of the year — the holidays."
King’s character, Sol Perez, is Lily and Jorge’s cousin on their mom’s side. According to Deadline, "they are a trans nonbinary oncology resident who is finally opening themselves up to love with a handsome doctor they work with."
That handsome doctor will be played by Todd Grinnell, who previously appeared on One Day at a Time as Schneider. His character, Dr. Miles Murphy, is "a reconstructive plastic surgeon with a good heart who has eyes for Sol Perez."
Romantic storylines for trans characters on TV are rare, and they’re even rarer in the form of a comedy. Some series like Pose, Transparent, Shameless, and Sense8 feature romantic storylines with trans characters, but those shows are usually more drama-focused.
With Love will be a one-hour romantic comedy series that will air on Amazon Prime. The show comes from Gloria Calderón Kellett, the creator of the very queer and very great One Day at a Time reboot that ran for three seasons on Netflix and one (shortened) season on CBS. The show broke ground when it comes to portraying a young, queer, Latina character and her family.
Other cast members for With Love include Rome Flynn (How to Get Away With Murder) and Desmond Chiam (The Falcon & The Winter Soldier).
King is a model and actress who first rose to fame after appearing on America’s Next Top Model. Since then, she’s acted in many shows including Equal, Good Trouble, The Bold and the Beautiful, Shameless, and the Emmy-winning Netflix series When They See Us.
"For every human out there who has saw themselves in some part of my journey these past 14 years, who have reached out, who have cried with me, prayed for me, I thank you," King wrote in an Instagram post where she shared the new of her casting. "You helped me keep pushing during an era that really didn't have those opportunities for me. Thank you. I never gave up, I studied, worked at it, and manifested! Can't wait for you to see this beautifully written show and to meet Sol as they find love."
