She’ll be starring opposite Tatiana Maslany in the project for Disney+.
TelevisionDisneyMey RudeVariety has reported that Out100 honoree and The Good Place star Jameela Jamil has been cast as the villain in Disney Plus’ upcoming She-Hulk series.
The series stars Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) as lawyer Jennifer Walters, a cousin of Bruce Banner who gets his Hulk powers after receiving a blood transfusion from him. Jamil is set to play the show’s villain Titania, who in the comics has immense super strength and durability.
Jamil is currently serving as a judge on the second season of the HBO Max Ballroom reality series Legendary alongside Leiomy Maldonado, Megan Thee Stallion, and Law Roach.
Jamil "officially" came out as queer following backlash to her being cast as a judge on the series. When the announcement was made, people wondered why a cis, straight celebrity with no ties to Ballroom culture would be a judge. Jamil clarified that she’s not straight.
"I added a rainbow to my name when I felt ready a few years ago, as it’s not easy within the south Asian community to be accepted, and I always answered honestly if ever straight-up asked about it on Twitter," she wrote at the time. "But I kept it low because I was scared of the pain of being accused of performative bandwagon jumping, over something that caused me a lot of confusion, fear and turmoil when I was a kid."
She-Hulk is sure to be a stunt-heavy and fight-heavy show, and we can’t wait to see some great fight choreography between two super-strong women. Hopefully, Marvel won’t pull any punches when making the series.
Jamil joins Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth, who will reprise their roles of Bruce Banner and Abomination in the series, alongside newcomers, Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), and Ginger Gonzaga (Kidding). The series will be directed by Kat Coiro and Anu Vilia, and Jessica Gao will serve as head writer.
After WandaVision and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier came out earlier this year, Disney+ is currently airing the Marvel series Loki, where the villain was recently confirmed to be genderfluid. She-Hulk is a part of a lineup of upcoming Marvel shows that also includes Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye.
