Have you heard the rumors?
HBOMey RudeIt’s going to be one buzzed-about homecoming.
HBO Max’s new Gossip Girl reboot will be temporarily returning home to the network the original show aired on, as the premiere episode will air on The CW the day after it debuts on HBO Max.
The new Gossip Girl will first air on HBO Max Thursday, July 8, and will air on The CW the following night, July 9, at 8pm. Currently, the plan is only to air the pilot on The CW.
The move comes as a part of WarnerMedia’s new strategy to use all of its platforms to promote HBO Max. Similarly, they aired episodes of HBO Max shows Titans and The Flight Attendant over the Thanksgiving holiday last year on TNT, TBS, and TruTV. This is a part of CEO Ann Sarnoff’s overall strategy at the company to eliminate silos.
The first trailer for the updated series dropped earlier this month and it has us all excited! It brings back a lot of the elite social scene and drama we’re used to, but also shows that this new version includes a lot more queerness.
In the steamy and spicy trailer, we got to see multiple scenes between male characters, including those played by Thomas Doherty (The Descendents 2, Legacies) and newcomer Evan Mock, and we highly doubt those two will be the only queer representation we see all season.
Back in 2019, Gossip Girl’s executive producer Josh Safran told Vulture that this time, the show will be a lot more diverse. “This time around the leads are nonwhite,” he said. “There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It’s very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that.”
However, not everyone is excited about this new, “woke” Gossip Girl. Several fans have pointed out on social media that they watched the original show because bad people are entertaining.
“The whole appeal of Gossip Girl is that they’re spoiled, rich kids far removed from reality, obsessed with materialism and themselves,” one fan tweeted. “Rich people aren’t socially conscious. Their morals are questionable, their lifestyles opulent which makes them ENTERTAINING FFS!”
Find out for yourself when Gossip Girl premieres July 8 on HBO Max and the following day on The CW.
