Emmy nominations were just announced earlier today, and the 30-year-old podcast host, writer, and comedian was able to snag a nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his work on Saturday Night Live, the first time in the live sketch comedy series' 46-year-long history that one of their featured players (i.e. a newer, junior cast member with less tenure and screen time than their higher-billed counterparts) has been nominated for such an award.
As if that wasn't a major thing in itself, perhaps more importantly, Yang also became the first Chinese American man to be nominated for an acting Emmy (which seems like a wild thing considering it's 2021)! When Bowen joined the SNL cast back in 2019, he made history as the first Chinese American cast member and the third out, gay male cast member in the series' decades-long run.
"Always in awe of every person who makes and crafts @nbcsnl!" he wrote in a humorous, Dolly Parton-inspired Instagram post, celebrating the major achievement.
But Bowen isn't the only LGBTQ+ talent making major Emmy history!
Earlier today, Pose star Mj Rodriguez also got some major love from the Television Academy after becoming the first out trans actor to be nominated in the Lead Actor or Actress categories
It looks like this year's Emmys are going to be one for the queer history books, and we can't to see what happens when it airs Sunday, September 19 on CBS!
