Actress Victoria Cartagena returns to the role of Renee Montoya!

After hearing rumors that the character would be added to the show, actress Victoria Cartagena has officially been cast in the role of lesbian crimefighter Renee Montoya for the upcoming third season of the CW hit show Batwoman.
In Batwoman, Montoya will be a former Gotham City Police officer who quit the force when she realized how corrupt it was. Now she runs the city’s “freaks division,” which was supposed to be a desk job — that is, until now.
Deadline describes her as “righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.”
This isn’t Cartagena’s first time playing the role. She also played Montoya on Fox’s Gotham, where she was a police officer. Although she’s playing the same role, the characters and universes are not connected in any way.
“I guess #ReneeMontoya and I have some unfinished business,” Cartagena tweeted, “So very excited to join this new group of talented artists, writers & crew who are doing their thing over here! They have welcomed me wholeheartedly! Grateful, humbled, hype AF...”
Renee Montoya, also known as the vigilante The Question, is a tough, Latina lesbian, who first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series. Over the years, she’s often been in romantic relationships with Batwoman, although in the comics that’s always been with Kate Kane as the caped crusader. She was played by Rosie Perez in the film Birds of Prey.
In the Batwoman TV show, Kate Kane is no longer wearing the mantle of the Bat after season one star Ruby Rose left the show due to injuries. Now the cowl is worn by Ryan Wilder, played by Javicia Leslie.
The end of Batwoman season 2 saw Kate Kane (now played by Wallis Day), leave Gotham to search for her long-lost cousin, Bruce Wayne. It also teased the introduction of bisexual supervillain Poison Ivy.
We absolutely can’t wait to see how queer the third season of Batwoman gets!
