This was the big one for fans of TK and Carlos.
TVEntertainmentMey RudeTarlos fans are back on top, baby!
After a tremendously difficult season three of 9-1-1: Lone Star that has already seen our favorite first responder couple break up, and then one of them end up in a coma, Tarlos fans are finally getting some good, good food.
Warning! This post contains spoilers for 9-1-1: Lone Star season three, episode four, "Push."
The latest episode of Lone Star, “Push,” didn’t just unravel the mystery of why paramedic TK (Ronen Rubinstein) and cop Carlos (Rafael Silva) broke up, we also got to see them get back together! And after the torture the show has put Tarlos shippers through this season so far, this was exactly the medicine we needed.
The episode begins with TK in the hospital, where he’s been in a coma ever since he fell into the water during an ice rescue. Two nurses are attending to him, talking about how he’s as good as dead. That’s when we see Carlos is there.
Even though we’ve learned that the two have been broken up for a few months at this point, Carlos is refusing to leave TK’s side.
“I’m holding a vigil for a man who doesn’t even want me in his life,” Carlos says to Nancy (Brianna Baker), who is staying there by his side.
“Isn’t that the definition of schmuck?” Nancy asks where he got the word “schmuck” from (from TK, of course), and then reassures him that TK still has feelings.
She says that when she brings him up, he bites her head off. He’s obviously not over Carlos and still loves him. “If he loves me so much then why did he break my heart,” Carlos asks.
Later, Carlos’ mom also visits to offer her support, and we find out that Carlos never told his parents about the breakup because he didn’t want to disappoint them. After she tells her son how proud they are and that he never has to worry about that, Carlos’ mom also tells him to talk to TK, even if he thinks he can’t hear him.
“I wouldn’t know what to say,” Carlos says.
“You tell him what’s on your heart,” she replies.
“If I told him what’s on my heart it wouldn’t be very nice,” he says.
“Now is the time, Carlitos, he needs to hear it and you need to say it,” she tells him. “Heaven forbid this is your last chance to say what you need to say to this man. Hazlo mijo.”
So when she leaves, that’s exactly what Carlos does. He says what’s on his heart. “I’m so mad at you right now. And the worst part about this is, if this is goodbye, I can’t even hold your hand. I can’t run my fingers through your hair or kiss your head. Not without it feeling like it’s some kind of violation,” he tells TK as he cries.
As he keeps on saying what’s on his heart, we return to the inside of TK’s mind, where we finally find out what TK stands for when his imaginary mom calls him Tyler Kennedy. We also finally get the explanation for how and why the two broke up.
It turns out, it all started when the two were looking for a new place to live after Carlos’ place was burned down by an arsonist. TK says they found the perfect place, but it was only looking for buyers not renters, and TK’s credit wasn’t good enough to buy it. When Carlos surprised TK by buying the place and putting both their names on the deed, TK got insecure and blew things up. He was afraid things were getting “too perfect,” and the last time that happened in a relationship, his boyfriend broke up with him.
Finally, after he’s talked this out with his imaginary mom, TK does what we’ve been begging him to do all season and wakes up. As soon as he’s awake, he turns to Carlos and whispers, “hey baby,” as his first words back. Carlos isn’t ready to believe it, but when TK tells him to breathe, he finally lets out the breath he’s been holding all episode and he realizes that he has the love of his life back. The two embrace and kiss right there on the hospital bed.
But the episode doesn’t end there! We also get to see the two of them go to the infamous loft!!! Carlos has it all set up with TK’s stuff like his exercise bike and blanket, and TK can’t help but smile and say, “you moved me in.” “Welcome home, TK” Carlos tells him, and the two kiss again, this time in the house they own and share together.
This was truly a tearjerker and a heartracer of an episode with Judd and Grace’s kid being born in the blizzard, the resolution of the 126 firehouse being shut down, and especially this Tarlos storyline. 9-1-1: Lonestar is hitting its stride perfectly, becoming one of the most addictive and best shows on all of TV.
While the entire cast and crew (the writing this season has been especially strong) is praiseworthy, none of this could be done without the amazing performances of Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael Silva. This episode especially showed what Silva is capable of, giving him some of the most heavy emotional lifting. And he put up a herculean effort that will surely get attention during TV award season.
Now that TK and Carlos are finally back together, we can relax a little while watching the show. New episodes of 9-1-1: Lone Star air Monday nights at 8/7c on Fox.
