Colton Underwood has some advice for all the single folks out there who are still looking for the one

The newly-engaged reality TV star and Bachelor alum co-hosted a broadcast on Amazon Live recently (with his engagement party event planner April Gray) and during the stream, he took some time to answer some of his fan's most burning questions, especially since this was his first public appearance since announcing his upcoming nuptials.

When asked if he has any advice for all the singles out there who are trying to get into a relationship as soon as they can, Underwood took a page out of Mama RuPaul's "if you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?!" school of thought, saying, "It took myself to find myself and make sure I was comfortable being single and an individual before I got into a relationship."

"It took a lot of therapy, a lot of self-work and self-care to figure out what I needed, how I could be a better partner, better communicator, and a lot of ups and downs to get to that point," he continued. "So my biggest piece of relationship advice is to make sure you are okay as an individual before becoming a partner."

That period of self-reflection obviously worked out really well for Underwood, especially since he just announced his engagement to political strategist Jordan C. Brown (who he has been linked to since last summer) earlier this week, a little less than a year after his headline-making public coming out.

Elsewhere in the stream, Underwood also talked about how Brown's proposal was a total surprise during his recent 30th birthday celebrations.

"Jordan has been my rock throughout the last year," he said. "He has been supportive, incredible, and loving and kind...I could go on and on for hours. We were celebrating my 30th birthday and my family was in town and we hosted it at my house. Then we did a little getaway trip to Big Sur and it turned out at Big Sur was the surprise engagement. I couldn't be happier and more excited to have that time with him. We were camping so it was in the outdoors, totally our vibe and it was honestly the best weekend ever."

And he even talked a little about how he and Brown first met.

"We met through mutual friends and originally I wasn't looking for anything," Underwood revealed. "I was working on myself at the time but gradually it became a connection and something I couldn't deny. We took our time and kept it private, we are still keeping aspects of it private, which I think is healthy and important."

As far as wedding planning goes, Underwood also revealed that he and Brown plan to be less traditional when it comes to their upcoming ceremony/celebrations and that they both plan to just have some fun with it.

"Jordan and I are looking forward to the non-traditional route of it and the aspects of our relationship, the engagement and even our wedding when the time comes to plan that," he said. "We are going to do it in a non-traditional, fun, weird way because it’s going to be authentic to us instead of fitting some mold."
