While Disney is in the midst of a firestorm of criticism following its stance and actions regarding Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, the company’s own stars are speaking out about the issue.

The latest stars to call Disney out for its actions, and inaction, are Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke, the stars of Disney+’s upcoming Marvel series Moon Knight.

During a virtual junket, the two stars were asked their opinions on the bill, and Disney’s response to it. The Moon Knight himself didn’t mince words, and instead, broke out into song.

“I guess my comment would be: gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gay gayyyyyy!” Isaac started singing when asked by Variety during the Moon Knight junket.

“It’s an absolutely ridiculous law,” he continued. “It’s insane. It’s insanity. And I hope that Disney as a company comes out as forcefully as possible against this idea. It’s astounding that it even exists in this country.”

Hawke wasn’t as emphatic, saying he didn’t know the specifics of the bill or the issue, and didn’t want to speak on that. Instead, he offered his thoughts on LGBTQ+ visibility in pop culture.

“My life’s work is dedicated to creating empathy,” he said. “I feel the power of stories that we tell each other. If you tell the truth about human experience, you invite empathy. And the more places we shine light, the less dark places there are, and there’s less to be afraid of. And the more we understand each other’s experiences, the more humanity we find in them, and the better we all actually feel. So that’s my job, and that’s what I believe in.”

Disney first came under fire when it was revealed that the company was donating money to legislators in Florida who were sponsoring that state’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill that would ban certain teachers from talking about gender and sexuality in classrooms.

The controversy blew up even more when Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek released a statement saying that the best way he thought the company could make a difference in the world was not through money or political stands, but through producing inspiring content. Then news started coming out about Disney and Pixar censoring gay content, and the company found itself facing a PR crisis like it had never seen.

Thankfully, Chapek and Disney have changed their tune, and are no longer donating to Florida politicians. Additionally, the company has said it will take steps to ensure it fights other laws like this from passing in other states.

Still, many fans and employees want the mega-corporation to do more. Moon Knight premieres on Disney+ March 30.
