The Modern Family alum dropped the bomb on Watch What Happens Live.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson was dishing with Andy Cohen on a recent episode of the Watch What Happens Live talk show when he dropped the big news about a once-discussed spinoff of Modern Family. Cohen was asking him a rapid-fire round of questions, including “was there a moment the show jumped the shark,” “favorite guest star” (he said Nathan Lane), and “best thing you bought with your Modern Family paycheck” (“this face,” he joked).
“The ending of the show opened up a potential Mitch and Cam spinoff with their new life in Missouri,” Cohen asked next.
“There were discussions and I think the network decided against it,” Ferguson revealed. “That's the first time I’ve ever said that!”
A surprised Cohen asked for more details, and Ferguson replied, “Yeah, I think they were just wondering if this was the right family to still tell that story,” he said. “I think that we’d been on for eleven years. I think they were ready to move in a different direction.”
“Um, Hulu needs programming,” Cohen joked.
Ferguson was a part of the beloved TV couple Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker on ABC’s Modern Family for eleven seasons. Starring opposite Eric Stonestreet, he was nominated for five Emmys for the role.
The couple was widely celebrated for depicting “normal” everyday married life between two men, and later adopting a daughter, Lily. For many years, they were one of the most visible gay families on TV.
Ferguson and Stonestreet reunited in real life recently for the first time in years at Random Access, a Thai comfort food restaurant in New York City. Stonestreet said the reunion was “a meet-cute two years in the making” and that he “missed this guy a lot.”
