Gia Gunn has gotten herself into a new controversy after throwing some shade at the RuPaul’s Drag Race queens who attended RuPaul’s DragCon LA 2022.
On Monday, Gunn wrote on Twitter:
“Say what you want but I saw 0 beauty at this year’s [DragCon]…what happened to the glamour? [shrug emoji].”
This annual event took place over the past weekend in Downtown Los Angeles' convention center and featured more queens than ever due to its forced hiatus as a result of the ongoing pandemic. The convention had nearly every single queen from seasons 12, 13, and 14 of Drag Race, the eight winners who will compete on All Stars 7, as well as a record-breaking number of contestants from international editions of the show.
As expected, the fans lost their minds over Gunn’s shady post and a few queens have already reacted with tweets of their own.
Trixie Mattel wrote: “Gia please never change lol.”
Shea Couleé tweeted: “A true comedy queen.”
BenDeLaCreme replied: “I’M SORRY I WAS JUST SO BUSY I’LL BE SURE TO POP BY NEXT TIME.”
Heidi N Closet quote-tweeted: “Now I usually don’t say anything especially when it comes to messy, foolish, and clearly incorrect social media post, but this time Ms. [Gia Gunn] I feel like this is a step too far. As sisters, we should build each other up not tear each other down. Until you learn that, take a seat.”
And Canada’s Drag Race season two star Oceane Aqua-Black had a more vulnerable reaction to Gunn’s statement:
“I think this tweet is a little bit hurtful and I say that with respect towards you without attacking you. I put a lot of effort in my drag for my first DragCon like many people. I even waved at you and you passed me by and ignored me totally.”
There’s no doubt that even more queens will be reacting to Gunn’s tweet over time, but these have been the most notable responses thus far.
To be fair, Gunn could have been being facetious when she shared her statement, which could be felt by Mattel and Couleé’s nonchalant responses to it. Nonetheless, certain queens seem to feel hurt by Gunn’s shade, so even more drama may be coming our way.
