Mr. Martin is about to star in the Apple TV+ series Mrs. American Pie.
TelevisionRicky MartinEntertainmentMey RudeIs that a heatwave I feel? Or is it just Ricky Martin coming back to our TV screens in a new Apple TV+ series?
Deadline announced today that Martin, also known as the King of Latin Pop, will star in the upcoming series Mrs. American Pie. This will be his first leading role in a television series.
Mrs. American Pie, based on the novel by Juliet McDaniel, is described as a period comedy piece starring Kristen Wiig as Maxine Simmons, a woman “attempting to secure her seats at America’s most exclusive table: Palm Beach high society.”
While the original novel took place in Palm Springs, California, reports say that the show will be in Palm Beach, Florida.
Martin is playing the male lead of the show, Robert, but little other information is known about his character. Mrs. American Pie will also star Wiig, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb, and Laura Dern. Dern is also executive producing. The series is being created by Abe Sylvia (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Dead to Me), who will also write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner.
According to Yahoo, the official synopsis says that “as Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and have-nots, Mrs. American Pie asks the same questions that still baffle us today: ‘who gets a seat at the table?’ “How do you get a seat at the table?’ What will you sacrifice to get there?’”
“Set during the powder keg era of the early 1970s, Mrs. American Pie is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance at superficial greatness,” it continues.
Martin’s last acting role came in Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, where he voiced the living toy Don Juan Diego. Before that, he appeared in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace as Versace’s boyfriend Antonio D’Amico. He was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for the role.
He’s said to be wanting to expand his acting career and is looking for meatier roles. It looks like he’s just booked his first one!
