"I think most people weren’t surprised – it’s something I’d been talking about with a lot of people in my life.”
Televisiontranstransgendercoming outMey RudeElliot Page made his Late Night with Seth Meyers return last night, talking about the new season of The Umbrella Academy, and how his real-life family supported his transition just as much as his family in the show.
In the new season of The Umbrella Academy, Page’s character comes out and is now known as Viktor, and his family is quick to support and affirm him. It was a great thing to see, and something that came directly from Page’s real life.
He said that he talked with Steve Blackman, the series’ showrunner, about incorporating his real-life transition into the show. But he also focused on how his real-life family was just as supportive as his fictional one.
“One of the nice things is, your siblings on the show, when receiving the news of the transition, are very supportive and loving. Was this something that you had?” Meyers asked. “I know you have run the gamut of having to respond to reactions, both positive and negative. Were the people closest to you in your real life as supportive as the people on the show?”
“Yeah, absolutely,” Page immediately smiled. “And I feel really grateful for that. I think most people weren’t surprised – it’s something I’d been talking about with a lot of people in my life.”
He also said that while he has gotten some bad reactions from the public, he really wants to focus on the good that has come out of his transition.
“Well, you know, what I want to focus on right now, and has been so extraordinary, is the degree of joy that I feel, the degree of presence that I feel,” Page said. “I feel a way that I really never thought possible for a long, long time. So that’s really what I’m focusing on embracing the most.”
He added that the divisions that conservatives try to place between trans people and cis people don’t really exist.
“I feel like it's one of those things where it's so unfortunate, because it’s like we’re all on the same team here. You know?” he said.
“Whether your trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, cis, we all have these expectations and these sort of limits and constraints, because of people’s sort of obsession with the binary and how we’re all supposed to live our lives,” Page continued. “So you know, to me, it’d be so special for us to all be able to connect and talk about how similar we are in all our journeys.”
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, which features a truly game-changing depiction of a character transitioning, is now on Netflix.
