All the rumors are false, yeah.
DragRuPaul's Drag RaceEntertainmentBernardo SimRuPaul isn’t the elusive chanteuse some fans thought she was.
In 2021, several theories popped up on social media speculating that RuPaul was never physically present for the filming of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under season one. These viewers claimed that perhaps the host had been entirely added to the series through the use of a green screen instead of being there in person.
Now, Drag Race Down Under contestant Art Simone and judge Rhys Nicholson have squashed this rumor for good during an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
Nicholson explained while standing right next to Simone:
“The most annoying thing to have come out where the show should be filmed is people thinking that RuPaul wasn’t there. Ru was there!”
Back in 2021, the Down Under finalist had already squashed this rumor. However, some fans thought that Simone might’ve been contractually obligated to “defend” Mama Ru at the time.
The queen wrote in a tweet from May 2021:
“Just here to quash the rumours that RuPaul was green-screened onto set. There’s no way we would have the budget after we splurged on those beautiful cement cherubs.”
For context, there are only two international editions of Drag Race that RuPaul has chosen to host outside of the U.S. series: Drag Race UK and Drag Race Down Under. Therefore, it is pretty special that Mama Ru has chosen to appear as a host on Down Under.
The choice to host Down Under comes from the fact that RuPaul has a very personal connection to this region of the world. Ru’s partner of over 20 years, Georges LeBar, was born in Perth, Australia and has exposed the Drag Race host to his culture several times over the years.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under season two premieres July 30 on WOW Presents Plus.
