On Wednesday, Netflix announced that it is not picking up the queer animated adult series Q-Force for a second season. The show, which was led by Sean Hayes voicing the main character, featured a cast that included Wanda Sykes, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers, Gary Cole, David Harbour, Laurie Metcalf, and Stephanie Beatriz.
This was the first show created, written, and produced by Gabe Liedman, who is best known for writing on shows like PEN15, Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Inside Amy Schumer, and Transparent, to name a few.
The series was largely panned by critics and received a 29% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, viewers had a much more positive response to the show, which culminated in its 78% audience score on the same platform.
2022 has been a pretty upsetting year for TV shows featuring LGBTQ+ characters prominently. For one, The CW canceled multiple queer-inclusive shows – from Batwoman to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to Legacies to the Charmed reboot. There were also other LGBTQ-heavy shows that aired their final seasons in 2022, such as Love, Victor, Grace and Frankie, Killing Eve, and even The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
All things considered, Netflix’s Q-Force is now among these major losses for queer storytelling on television. Hopefully, other shows will come along to fill these gaps left by so many final seasons and cancelations.
Q-Force season one is streaming on Netflix.
