Each week, the winner of the Head of Household competition on Big Brother gains the ultimate power in the game – that person gets to sleep in a private room, receives a bag of goodies, gets a letter from a loved one, and chooses which players are nominated for eviction. Getting a letter is a very significant prize on Big Brother given that these players are sequestered from any contact with the outside world and really miss their loved ones.
Throughout this Big Brother 24 season, every single HOH winner has been shown reading the letter he or she received from home in the episode that followed their competition win. But on episode 14 – which aired last night, Sunday, August 7 – that was not the case. After winning HOH for the first time this season, gay contestant Michael Bruner was not featured in the episode reading the letter sent by his fiancé, Hayden. To reiterate, Big Brother 24 had four HOHs prior to Bruner, and all four of them were shown reading the letters sent by their loved ones.
Hayden called out CBS in a tweet:
“Wow, very surprised by [Big Brother] not including my letter to Michael when every single other letter this season has been included… [upside-down face emoji]. For Michael, I wish they had put it in the episode tonight [smiling with a tear emoji] #bb24 @CBS.”
Bruner has been a competition beast all season long, having won four of the five Power of Veto competitions on Big Brother 24 thus far. Alas, this was his very first Head of Household win, which made it a pretty special moment.
While there could be a few production-specific reasons as to why Bruner wasn’t featured in the episode reading the letter sent by Hayden, it is rather strange that this very sweet moment wasn’t shown on TV. This hasn’t been the most eventful season of all time, and this particular episode spent a lot of time on subplots that ultimately aren’t more important or compelling as Bruner reading the letter from his fiancé – particularly during a time when LGBTQ+ rights are being attacked and same-sex marriage is unfortunately under threat once again.
Thankfully, fans watching the Big Brother 24 live feeds did get to watch Bruner reading his fiancé’s letter and have shared the video on social media.
