Has the Warner Bros./Discovery merger led to the cancelation of yet another queer show?
HBOEntertainmentGay SuperheroesMey RudeIt appears that the Warner Bros./Discovery merger has led to another queer show being canceled.
As a part of the merger between the two companies, HBO Max and Discovery Plus will become one streaming service next summer. This merging involves a “restructuring” of HBO Max’s original content and animation, putting a lot of our favorite shows at risk.
In the latest edition of TV Line’sMatt’s Inside Line, Matt Webb Mitovich answered a question from a fan asking if he’d heard anything about a possible upcoming fifth season for the popular animated show Young Justice, about a team of young superheroes from the DC universe.
“HBO Max from go had only ordered a single season of the onetime Cartoon Network and DC Universe series, and that plan has not changed,” he replied. “There are currently no plans for a Season 5, I am told.”
Previously, Young Justice showrunner Greg Weisman had mentioned on Twitter that the show hasn’t been renewed for a fifth season.
The fourth season of Young Justice ended by teasing storylines involving Supergirl and Darkseid, but unfortunately, it looks like we’ll never get to see where those stories could’ve gone.
Throughout its four seasons, several LGBTQ+ characters were introduced to Young Justice. The team’s sometime-leader Kaldur’ahm (a.k.a. Aqualad) has a crush on his childhood friend Tula in season 1, but in season 3, he’s dating a fellow Atlantean man named Wynnde. Two other heroes, Bart Allen (a.k.a. Kid Flash) and Ed Dorado, Jr. (a.k.a. El Dorado), are also a couple.
The one possible saving grace for Young Justice could be that it is a legacy DC title. With characters like Superboy, Robin, and Blue Beetle, the show has a lot of recognizable faces. This is one of the reasons that another DC animated show, Harley Quinn, is reportedly safe from the merger.
Queer content like Little Ellen and the Batgirl movie have also been canceled, with the latter (which was set to feature the debut of trans character Alysia Yeoh) being canceled despite completing principal photography.
