A deleted scene is having fans question Daemon Targaryen's sexuality.
HBOEntertainmentbisexualBisexualityMey RudeHouse of the Dragon fans are hoping a new deleted scene of the show is revealing a major character to be a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
So far in the show, Prince Daemon Targaryen has been ostensibly straight, marrying his wife Laena and having children with her. However, one scene from the show, and one deleted scene, are having fans question if he also likes men.
In the scenes, we can see Daemon leaning in close to intimately whisper something to a male server who is giving him food. Then, in the deleted scene, Daemon and that same server are seen once again with their faces close together as they sit next to each other.
House of the Dragon already has one confirmed gay character, Laenor Velaryon, who was revealed to be gay in episode 5 when he spoke with his future wife Rhaenyra and they discuss fulfilling the public parts of their marriage, but continue to do other activities separately. Laenor is seeing Ser Joffrey Lonmouth on the side, and Rhaenyra is seeing Ser Criston Cole.
Unfortunately, Laenor wasn't able to enjoy his extra-marital same-sex relationship with Ser Joffrey for long, as shortly after the wedding, Joffrey told Criston that he was aware of his relationship with Rhaenyra. Criston’s response was to brutally beat him to death, and leave his body for Laenor to find.
For many, this was seen as a repeat of the old “Bury Your Gays” trope, which has been used several times in Game of Thrones. The trope comes when a show or movie kills off its gay characters in a way that serves straight storylines, is especially brutal and cruel, or shows that death is the only possible future that queer people can have in the world of the story.
Will Daemon be another chance for House of the Dragon fans to see some queer romance? Only time will tell.
House of the Dragon is currently streaming weekly on HBO Max.
