After three seasons, the ballroom-themed competition series is getting the axe.
BallroomEntertainmentHBOSaskia Maxwell KellerLegendary, HBO Max’s beloved ballroom competition series, has been canceled after just three seasons.
The news broke just one day after FBoy Island was canceled after two seasons. It appears that Legendary is just the latest in HBO Max’s purge of unscripted television.
Legendary features voguing teams, each with five dancers and a house mother, who compete in a different themed ball challenge every week. The show was fronted by MC Dashaun Wesley, with judges Leiomy Maldonado, Jameela Jamil, Law Roach, Megan Thee Stallion, and Keke Palmer.
Legendary was praised by many, including GLAAD, for its inclusion. In a sector of television where this can so often be lacking, it proudly featured Black and brown queer talent. Produced by Scout Productions (the same producer as Queer Eye), the first season of Legendary premiered in 2020, with the second season in 2021, and the third season in May of this year.
Many fans expressed their devastation on Twitter.
Dancers Dro Tisci and Kitten Heel reflected on the show’s impact on their individual careers and on the ballroom community at large.
Maldonado, the only judge so far (at the time of this writing) to publicly comment on Legendary’s cancellation, tweeted: “Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about ballroom and [its] existence… I feel broken.”
