Mama Ru is a true legend.
You better werk! RuPaul’s Drag Race fans are gagging over an old clip of RuPaul that has resurfaced this week ahead of the season 15 premiere on MTV.
In the video, Mama Ru is seen getting an invitation from MTV correspondent Alison Stewart to go shopping. Throughout the segment, RuPaul was already preaching iconic catchphrases such as “you’re born naked and the rest is drag,” “everybody say love,” and “you better werk!” not only to Stewart but also to all of the shoppers at the mall.
When asked about her pronouns, RuPaul tells Stewart that she doesn’t have any preference. Later, the MTV reporter asks Ru to clarify what “werking it” actually means.
RuPaul explains:
“Werking is doing the best you can do at whatever it is that you’re doing. It’s like, you’re here, it’s now, you might as well pay the cost to be the boss. It’s my turn. I’m coming out. Who’s the boss? Hello!”
The interview ends with these two girlfriends getting milkshakes and sitting down in the food court. When Stewart asks the future Drag Race host if “Middle America” is ready for her, Ru notes that she is a symptom of the change that’s going on in the country – and that this change will come whether or not RuPaul is involved in it.
Stewart ends this 1993 interview with a question, “What’s your next big challenge?”
“World domination!” Mama Ru responds with a knowing smile and a laugh.
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 premieres Friday, January 6 on MTV.
