Critics are already calling the show one of the best of the year.
HBOEntertainmentMey RudeAccording to critics who have seen the show, we’re getting a whole lot more of The Last of Us’ gay characters than we thought.
The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie as they travel across a post-apocalyptic America trying to avoid fungus-infected zombies. Along the way, they are helped by a man named Bill who is the last survivor of a town taken over by the zombies. In the game, Frank mentions he had a partner named Frank.
While in the video game Frank is dead by the time we meet Bill, the series will give us the two men’s backstory in an episode dedicated entirely to them.
Both the cast and crew of the show, and critics who have seen it, are especially praising episode three of the series, which finally gives us the whole backstory of these two characters.
According to Pink News, the third episode focuses on Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) and spans two decades of their relationship. What starts out as an exchange of letters soon blossoms into a romance.
Bartlett, who plays Frank, had high praise for the episode’s writing.
“The scripts that I had to work with, one particular script is one of the best hours of television I've ever read. It's beautiful. It's beautifully written,” he told Collider. “There are these zombie creatures in it, but it's tender and it's human. I think it's gonna be really special. I haven't seen any of it yet, but I'm really proud of the work we did and I think it could be really, really wonderful. It will be really wonderful.”
On Toisto, one reviewer said that episode three was “a particular highlight,” adding, “It's a stunning work of art. One of the finest hours of TV in years, and so far beyond everything else in The Last of Us that the rest of the series has to work twice as hard just to keep up.”
Overall, The Last of Us is widely getting rave reviews from critics, who are already calling it one of the best TV shows of 2023.
The Last of Us premieres on HBO this Sunday, January 15.
