After two seasons, HBO Max has canceled its reboot of the classic teen drama Gossip Girl. The season 2 finale, which airs on January 26, will serve as the series finale.
“A big thank you to all the GG fans around the world,” creator and showrunner Joshua Safran said in a statement on social media. “You’re the reason we came back in the first place, and who knows, maybe the reason we will meet again. Much love.”
Initially, the reboot seemed to be a hit, setting the record for HBO Max’s most-watched opening weekend for an original series. However, after that, fans didn’t exactly latch onto the show the same way they did for the original version.
While the reboot didn’t match the original’s popularity, it did improve in the area of diversity. The new series had a diverse cast and included queer characters. In fact, it was just nominated for a GLAAD Media Award.
Safran went on Twitter to talk about the cancellation and his hopes that the show could find a new home. He thanked the network, his writers and cast, and the crew, saying, “this was honestly the greatest set I ever worked on, top to bottom.”
“We are currently looking for another home, but in this climate, that might prove an uphill battle, and so if this is the end, at least we went out on the highest of highs,” he continued, revealing that he will be shopping the show to other networks and streamers.
“Thank you for watching, and I hope you’ll tune into the finale next Thursday to see how it all comes together. Xoxo,” he finished.
The series finale for Gossip Girl will air next Thursday, January 26 on HBO Max.
