The “realness” and “authenticity” of the show promise “lots of tears and drama.”
MTVEntertainmentAndrew J. StillmanIn a recent episode of RealiTea with Derek Z, Brad Goreski, Todrick Hall, and Joey Zauzig all sat down to discuss MTV’s upcoming reality series The Real Friends of WeHo— and what viewers can expect.
When asked how the show differs from other reality shows, Goreski, who’s been in a number of reality shows prior, said, “It’s different because it’s an ensemble, it’s different because it’s all gay guys, and it’s different because we were getting to know each other on camera, you know? Our experience of getting to know each other is unfolding before the audience’s eyes.”
The “realness” and “authenticity” on the show also make way for lots of “tears and drama,” but Goreski thinks that the show will ultimately deliver something that people don’t expect.
In regard to the “real” name similar to the incredibly popular The Real Housewives franchise, Goreski said the most “obvious” difference is that it’s an all-gay cast and follows their day-to-day lives and them as a group. Although he admits that there are similar elements to how The Real Housewives stories are told, he says it “doesn’t take 18 episodes to get to it.”
When the conversation turned toward Hall, he admitted that he came into the cast with “the most controversy.” For those unfamiliar, Todrick is rumored to have not paid his dancers and that he owes $100,000 in unpaid rent for a house he supposedly owned. (He previously posted a now-deleted YouTube video titled “Bought My Dream House.”)
Hall said it was good to have a platform to share his story and that he was “pleased” with how the show portrays him. He thanks Goreski in particular, who had apprehension about working with together but allowed their friendship to flourish.
He also says he hopes this show will help others realize “they are not broken and that they will find their own tribe.”
The Real Friends of WeHo premieres Friday, January 20 on MTV.
