"Strap in hunty, Annabelle could NEVER!"
FilmSaturday Night LivecomedyMey RudeSaturday Night Live and Aubrey Plaza brought back queer horror icon M3GAN for a new, gay sketch this past weekend.
Plaza was hosting SNL with musical guest Sam Smith (and a special appearance from Kim Petras) over the weekend, marking her first time hosting the legendary sketch comedy show.
SNL took advantage of having queer weirdo Plaza as host and had her dress up, complete with blue contact lenses, as a new version of the killer doll whose movie is shattering box office expectations.
In the sketch, Plaza plays M3GAN 2.0 opposite Chloe Fineman as the original M3GAN in a trailer for a new M3GAN sequel.
“M3GAN is a box office powerhouse, which has captivated one demographic above all: gay men,” the trailer for the “slapped together” sequel says.
Plaza’s M3GAN 2.0 is truly the bitchiest version of her movie self, and that makes the gays love her even more. She offers them poppers, spins and dips, calls them ‘homos,’ and threatens them with violence. And they love every second of it!
“M3GAN 2.0. This one’s for the gays,” indeed!
Unfortunately, the sketch doesn’t quite hit the levels of campiness or gay iconography that the original movie did, and that the real sequel (due in 2025) will undoubtedly reach.
The highlight of the sketch is when the film’s star Alison Williams shows up at the gay bar, warning the patrons to stay away from M3GAN.
“Oh my god. Are you from the show Girls??” Bowen Yang asks.
“Oh yeah, you had your butt eaten! That’s so cool! Join us!” another gay man says.
After Williams nervously asks, “Even though I’m straight?” Yang raises his glass to her and says, “Mama, if you’re getting your ass ate on TV, you’re an ally, sis!”
In real life, a sequel titled M3GAN 2.0 has actually been announced. And with Williams and Violet McGraw (who plays the girl M3GAN bonds with) returning to star and screenwriter Akela Cooper (who also wrote Malignant) back writing the script, it’s sure to be just as good, if not better, than the first.
