Unfortunately, David Fincher’s Mindhunter is officially over.

Fincher, who served as executive producer, director, and de facto showrunner for most episodes of the series created by Joe Penhall for Netflix, has announced that the long-awaited third season of Mindhunter will not be happening.

“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for a Season 3],” Fincher told French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche. “I don’t blame them; they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer [his next film]. It’s a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”

Mindhunter ran for two flawless seasons on Netflix starting in 2017. It starred out actor Jonathan Groff as young FBI agent Holden Ford who teams up with grizzled partner Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and a lesbian psychologist named Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) to interview serial killers hoping to learn more about them and prevent future crimes.

Unlike many crime shows, Mindhunter did not glamorize its killers or turn murders into something salacious. Instead, it showed the dangers of getting too enamored with true crime as Ford starts to obsess over the killers he’s interviewing.

The series was also known for its incredible and terrifyingly real portrayals of infamous serial killers. Cameron Britton was nominated for an Emmy for playing killer Ed Kemper, and other actors including Happy Anderson as Jerry Brudos, Christopher Livingston as Wayne Williams, Sam Strike as Montie Rissell, Jack Erdie as Richard Speck, Oliver Cooper as David Berkowitz, and Damon Herriman as Charles Mason were celebrated for their portrayals.

Unfortunately, we won’t be getting any more of this terrific show. While Netflix never officially canceled it, this is confirmation that we won’t be seeing any more of the Mindhunter team.
