The terrific first season of The Last of Us aired its finale on HBO last night, but don’t worry, because more Joel and Ellie are coming — a lot more.

In an interview with GQ UK, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were asked if the second season would cover all of The Last of Us Part II, like the first season covered all of the first game.

“No. No way,” Mazin replied.

“It’s more than one season,” Druckmann added.

They were coy about how many seasons, though, with Mazin adding “you have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”

The showrunners also talked about what we can expect from upcoming seasons.

“Some of the stuff I’m most excited for are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann said. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

One of the storylines viewers are excited to see in future seasons is the love story between Ellie and Dina, a girl she meets while on her journey.

In fact, many viewers think that we were already introduced to Dina. In episode 6, Ellie is brought to a religious community in Wyoming. There, while she’s eating, she yells at another girl her age to stop staring at her. Fans immediately started questioning if it was Dina, as that is similar to how the girls describe meeting in the game.

Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, has also talked about their excitement to delve into the Ellie/Dina romance in Part II.

“I’m really excited, to be honest, for the Ellie/Dina story. I’ve watched a cut together, someone’s made a phenomenal — I don’t know how they do it — like an amazing edit of just the gameplay, like Ellie and Dina’s love story. So I’m excited to play that out.”

Trans actor Ian Alexander has also expressed interest in playing the live-action version of the trans character they voiced in the video game. In The Last of Us Part II, Alexander played Lev, a trans teen trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic world.

“I was just so grateful that I was able to be a part of that franchise and I’m so excited that we got picked up for season two,” he said. “My fingers are crossed that I get to reprise my role as Lev.”

Season one just ended, so we probably won’t be getting season two for a while. But that gives us plenty of time to theorize what will happen!
