Yet another queer show has been canceled by Netflix — this time it’s the gay Spanish romantic comedy Smiley.

Smiley was based on creator Guillem Clua’s play of the same name that followed the love story between two Barcelona men, Alex (Carlos Cuevas) and Bruno (Miki Esparbé). The first, and now only, season told the story from the original play, and the second season was supposed to continue the story with all-new material.

However, Clua told Spanish news source Aquí Catalynya that a second season isn’t happening anymore.

“I can tell you that there won’t be a second season of Smiley,” he said. “But there will be other things that I can’t reveal right now.”

It’s a shame that Clua never got to explore the ideas he had for a second season of Smiley with Netflix, but hopefully, his quote points to something good coming from him soon. It was a big hit with audiences, and even was nominated for Outstanding Spanish-Language Scripted Television Series at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards.

Other queer shows Netflix has canceled in the last few years include Warrior Nun, I Am Not Okay With This, First Kill, The Get Down, Special, Sense8, One Day at a Time, GLOW, The Society, Q-Force, Uncoupled, Everything Sucks!, and Atypical.

With many of these shows, fans have campaigned (usually unsuccessfully) to get more seasons either from Netflix or another streamer, so maybe there’s some hope for Smiley yet.
