TV writers are on strike, and we support them!

The Writers Guild of America officially went on strike for the first time in 15 years, with picket lines in Hollywood and New York demanding fair pay and compensation and job stability.

This means that until the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers give the writers the pay and job security they deserve, a lot of shows will be put on pause. This includes late night shows, as well as series that were being written before the strike started.

Of course, this means that some of our favorite queer shows will be put on hold. But we’re happy to wait as long as it means the people who write these shows get what they are due.

Abbott Elementary writer Brittani Nichols told Democracy Now that the industry values Wall Street over workers, and that if the strike continues, it could impact the number of episodes the upcoming season has. “We are a show that writes while we air,” she said. “If this strike goes on for a significant period of time, our show will not come out on time and that could change the amount of episodes which I’m sure people will be very upset about.”

Big Mouth

The 8th and final season of this Netflix original was six weeks into writing and would have finished writing in August if it wasn’t for the strike.

Hacks

Filming on the upcoming third season of the terrific comedy Hacks has halted because of the writer’s strike, and it won’t pick up until after the strike is resolved.

Saturday Night Live

SNL

Saturday Night Live, with queer stars Bowen Yang and Molly Kearney, has announced that it will air repeats until further notice. Shows that were to be hosted by Pete Davidson, Kieran Culkin, and Jennifer Coolidge have been canceled.

The show’s co-creator Ashley Lyle tweeted about how the strike will affect her show. “Well, we had exactly one day in the #YellowJackets S3 writers’ room,” she said. “It was amazing, and creatively invigorating, and so much fun, and I’m very excited to get back to it as soon as the #WGA gets a fair deal. #1u #unionstrong.”
