In today’s Hollywood, no classic TV or film seems safe from a possible reboot that, one way or another, just never lives up to the hype of the original.
When it comes to beloved series The Golden Girls, though, no reboot could do the show justice, says creator Susan Harris.
In a recent Entertainment Weekly interview, Harris said that producers “wanted to do Golden Girls the Musical and re-do Golden Girls, and we’ve always said no because Golden Girls would not be Golden Girls without that cast.”
When a ‘90s spinoff failed after one season, Harris realized it was because Beatrice Arthur’s character of Dorothy only made occasional appearances.
“Without Dorothy, it didn’t work,” Harris said. “[The Golden Girls was] what it was and that’s the way it should remain.”
Today, Betty White is the only surviving Golden Girls actress, who turned 95 last month.
The entire Golden Girls series is now available to stream on Hulu.
