Cuban-American journalist and correspondent Gio Benitez has joined the weekend edition of Good Morning America as a co-anchor. He will now host the show alongside Janai Norman and Whit Johnson.

Born in Miami, Florida, Benitez has been working as a correspondent for ABC News since 2013. Over the course of his career, Benitez has contributed with reporting for shows like Nightline, World News Tonight, 20/20, and Good Morning America. Now, he’s officially landed an anchor position on the coveted morning news TV show, which means even more gay representation on a platform that has already featured Robin Roberts for many years.

Since 2016, Benitez has been married to fellow TV host and correspondent Tommy DiDario. In April 2023, the couple celebrated their 7-year anniversary.

Following the news that Benitez is joining the weekend edition of GMA as a co-anchor, DiDario took to Twitter to celebrate his husband’s massive accomplishment. He wrote in a tweet:

“The moment [Gio Benitez] signed his contract to become the new co-anchor of [Good Morning America] Saturday and Sunday. It’s been hard keeping this secret because I’ve been bursting with pride. The size of your talent is matched by the size of your heart. Congratulations, my anchorman.”
