This is officially the end of the voyage.

Two months after the beloved and critically-acclaimed gay pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death was canceled by Max after just two seasons, the show’s creator has announced that he is no longer trying to find an alternate home for the show.

Fans had been hoping that there was some chance that the show could continue at a new network or streamer, but now, we know that won’t happen.

“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” the show’s creator David Jenkins wrote on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”

“Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss,” he continued.

Jenkins also had a message of thanks for the “wonderful fans” of the show.

“You are lovely and earnest. Those kinds of things feel in short supply at times. But they aren’t,” he wrote. “A love like ours can’t disappear in an instant. When we see each other off in mystic, say hello. We won’t say goodbye, because we’re not leaving. We’re just taking a breather until next time we can share something together 💜🦄🏴☠️ #ourflagmeansdeath”

On its surface, Our Flag Means Death was a historical comedy about real-life pirates Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard meeting and falling in love, but it became so much more than that.

The show had one of the most tender love stories we’ve seen on TV in years, and had a cast packed full of queer characters.

In addition to Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi’s gay main characters, there were queer pirates played by Con O’Neill, Nathan Foad, Vico Ortiz, Matthew Maher, Samson Kayo, Minnie Driver, Rachel House, and more.

We’ll miss this crew.

Our Flag Means Death is streaming on Max.
