"We are just trying to tell a good story without anything feeling forced."
PopnographyChris ThomasThe hit HBO show Insecure is a lot of things: it’s brilliant, it's hilarious, it's woke. On an episode of the second season, it even became a voice for the rampant homophobia in the Black community, thanks to a storyline about Molly dating a man who had a same-sex experience. Issa Rae, creator and star of Insecure, isn’t ready to stop there when it comes to LGBTQ issues, though.

Rae was asked about the possibility of tackling transgender issues in next year’s third season and her response is promising. “It’s just figuring out the right way to do that," she told BET. "I think so many other shows are doing a great job without feeling like it’s shoehorned and it fits in naturally. For us, it’s just about finding the most natural way. There’s so many topics we wanted to explore but, at the end of the day, we are just trying to tell a good story without anything feeling forced. It’s something I’d love to tackle. We almost did it this season but it didn’t fit within the story we were trying to tell. Hopefully, we’ll see what season three will hold.”
Issues surrounding trans people of color are especially important right now, given that this community is disproportionately affected by violence and discrimination, so we can only hope that Rae will find a way to effectively incorporate it.
