The duo sang Cyndi Lauper’s iconic 80s classic “Time After Time.”
Rose DommuJeremiah Lloyd Harmon, the gay pastor’s son who has won over American Idol fans with his spectacular talent and emotional backstory, sure knows how to pick a song. In recent episodes he’s wowed the judges with renditions of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” and of course his original song “Heaven.”
On this week’s episode, Harmon was paired with Broadway icon and Widows star Cynthia Erivo for a spellbinding rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘80s classic “Time After Time.” It gave the musician a chance to get out from behind the piano and show off a bit of his stage persona (and some serious Phil Collins-esque vocal stylings) and clearly it worked. The judges were impressed and Harmon advanced to the next round.
In Out’s interview with Harmon last week, the contestant explained that the show hasn’t presented his story — that his religious parents rejected him after he came out as gay — as honestly as he’d like.
“I've never said that my parents have rejected me, or don't accept me as me, their son,” Harmon told Out. “And that in combination with my parents not being able to make it to the first couple performances and [not being] featured on the show yet, you know, it's easy for people to take that and run with it and say, ‘Oh, Jeremiah's parents are these monstrous, abusive people,’ which in reality, they're just trying to integrate this experience and they're processing it in their own way.”
Harmon also revealed that he’s starting to see himself as a real contender, and that while he “didn't plan to get this far...no matter what happens I'll be able to keep taking this journey in some other way. But yeah, I'm kind of getting closer to the finale and I'm like, maybe I could. Maybe I could take this.”
