Killing Eve isn’t only a smart, sexy spy thriller full of endlessly charming murderers — although yes it is and yes you should be watching. It’s also a show in which the main characters, a Russian francophile with a passion for assassin(ation) and a former MI6 agent, are obsessed with each other, and that obsession isn’t straight-washed for the masses. On Killing Eve, the sexual undertones in Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle’s (Jodie Comer) relationship are overtones — in the first season finale, Villanelle tells Eve, “I masturbate about you a lot,” which Eve finds less off-putting than flattering.

Comer is aware that her character’s sexuality is one of the things that has made this ruthless killer more human and something of a queer icon.

“It’s a strange one,” Comer told Vulture at a recent AMC event. “I’m so detached from the show when I’m not in it. But I definitely sense that — and speaking to Luke Jennings, who wrote the novellas, I know Villanelle has really resonated with the LGBT community.”

And the actress added that her character’s bisexuality — if it can be called that, because Villanelle only seemed interested in her season one fling as a means to an end rather than any serious romantic interest — is one of the things that makes her compelling to play.

“The fact that she’s unapologetically herself and free with her sexuality — her sexuality was something I never questioned and always celebrated. That’s what’s so refreshing. It’s just a part of her. That’s what I love about her. It’s not something that [the writers] spoke about or is featured really heavily — you just accept this woman for who she is. And I think it’s really beautiful.”
