‘Pose’ Will Begin Streaming on Netflix in May

Fresh ofg its Peabody Awards win, FX’s Pose will hit Netflix next month. The streaming service announced the show’s addition Tuesday, on Twitter.

Set in 1980s New York City, Pose is a monumental show for television. Helmed by showrunner Ryan Murphy, show creator Steven Canals, and writers Janet Mock and Our Lady J, the show boasts the largest cast of Black and brown queer and trans people in TV history. It furthered that point by casting the most trans people in leading roles of a television show. These women are in the driving seat of the show, and viewers watch how they choose to, and are sometimes forced to, move through the world.

Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, and Indya Moore play these leading women. They are rounded out with a cast that includes Billy Porter, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Evan Peters, and Kate Mara.

The show’s cast largely comprises of the ballroom community on screen, populating fictional houses like Abundance and Evangelista. As such, members of the ballroom community play as on screen talent as well as advisers on the accuracy and production of the project. Scene icons like Jose Xtravaganza and Sol Williams Pendavis amongst others all make appearances — Hector Xtravaganza, who passed in late 2018, served as a consultant and make cameo apperances. Even some of the onscreen characters seem to hearken back to figures that have now passed from the community: Elektra Abundance, played by Jackson, seems to pull from Crystal LaBeija at times; Blanca Evanjelista, played by Rodriguez, finds similarities with Angie Xtravaganza; and Angel Evangelista, played by Moore, evokes memories of Venus Xtravaganza.

The series has brought home an American Film Institute Award, Dorian Awards, a Television Academy Award and a Peabody Award. They’ve also been nominated for Golden Globes, a Gotham Independent Film Award, and a Writers Guild of America Award. The NAACP Image Awards, a ceremony that purposes to recognize representation, notably snubbed the series.

Meanwhile, the cast is already in production on the second season of the FX show which will jump forward in time and launch the day that Madonna’s “Vogue” music video debuted.

Pose will debut on Netflix May 10.
