Despite the fact that Hollywood continues to make blockbuster movies and TV shows featuring queer people, from Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, to Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite, it’s no secret that the entertainment industry has a major problem with casting straight actors in queer roles. So when one TV project comes along with the promise to elevate intersectional queer storytelling while also casting queer and trans characters with queer and trans people, we shouldn’t have to be so shook, but we are.

Filmmaker Aj Knight’s first showDaisy Boy would do just that. The series follows the coming-of-age of a closeted queer stuck in the middle of a Southern suburban town. His alter ego, Daisy Boy, is an unapologetically gay, feather-wearing, cabaret-dancing Mary that juxtaposes his real life shyness. The story balances the wallflower-esque timidness of Jameson’s public life and the surreality of his private persona.

The promotional video, co-created by Darrin Bush, is honestly one of our favorite things we’ve seen in a while. You should do yourself a favor and take five minutes to bear witness to the absolutely delightful and unadulterated faggotry that brought this idea to life, complete with back-up dancing show girls, strip teases, full-on dance breaks, and a dog named Cher.

"It's like Lizzie McGuire but gay," reads the tagline of the show’s Kickstarter page. The team needs the support of the Hollywood industry, and in order to do so, it needs to cover the cost of cameras, crew, sets, music, and queer actors. Knight says that the first draft of the season is already written, bubt all it needs is the support of the community.

“To be honest, growing up in the closet, in a town where I felt different from a lot of people around me, a show like Daisy Boy would’ve changed my life,” says Knight. “If we can help queer kids, or anyone else, feel less fucked up, or alone, then that’s what we’re gonna do!”

In conjunction with the show, Knight has launched a separate DAISY BOY project that interviews members of the LGBTQ+ community, documented on their Instagram.

You can support Knight on his venture to make the next Lizzie McGuire by heading to the Kickstarter campaign where he has raised $10,000 of his $50,000 goal upon time of publication. Even if you can’t help support this show, what you can do is share this article to help bring more eyes to queers (and very wealthy investor daddies?) that might be able to.
