The actress announced the new gig a day after her Pose character’s death.
Pose FXTre'vell AndersonIf the old adage, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” wasn’t enough to inspire you to make something good out of something bad, Angelica Ross is taking her swing at it. Just a day after the actress’ beloved character Candy Ferocity was killed off of Pose, Ross announced she’s got a new gig — as a series regular on the much-buzzed-about American Horror Story: 1984.
“I am ELATED to make history as the first trans actor to secure 2 series regular roles, leaping from #PoseFX to #AHS1984,” she tweeted. “I’m so honored & excited to join the @AHSFX family!!!”
The series, also produced by Pose co-creator and Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Murphy, is the ninth season of the hit horror anthology series. Contrary to some initial thoughts, the title is not a reference to the dystopian George Orwell novel, but rather an homage to the slasher films of the 80s — so get ready for gore!
It was reported earlier this year that AHS mainstays Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson will not be in this season. But with Ross’ addition, surely no one will notice. She’ll star opposite Emma Roberts and Gus Kenworthy.
Murphy confirmed the news in an Instagram post.
“Though she will always be our Candy, and our show suffers this incredible loss, I am elated that the world will get much more Angelica,” he said. “She is joining the American Horror Story family in another unforgettable role.”
The gig, according to Ross’ tweet, is historic, making her the first transgender actress to secure two series regular roles. Laverne Cox was the first trans person to play a trans series regular on broadcast TV on CBS's Doubt, which was cancelled after two episodes.
Such an announcement seems like the perfect salve for the wounds of Pose fans who expressed their sadness that Candy, and Ross, would no longer be on the show. But as expected, she’s always in her bag.
“I'm really focused on becoming a creator in Hollywood,” Ross told Out. “Just like Janet Mock has her overall deal over at Netflix, I'm over here in my corner writing and producing things. I think that we just need to be prepared to keep creating more content.”
American Horror Story: 1984 is set to premiere Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
