There’s a new pansexual faerie in town, and I’m not talking about that self-described “empath” I met at a Beltane gathering in Tennessee who thinks men’s only spaces are “sacred.” In the upcoming Amazon series Carnival Row, Cara Delevingne will play a “pansexual faerie.”

The show is set in a “neo-Victorian” alternate universe where faeries have immigrated to the human world after their own world was invaded. Orlando Bloom stars as a detective who falls for Delevigne, a faerie who the actress says she played as pansexual — and she’s not the only one.

“All faeries generally are,” Delevingne told Variety. “They don’t see gender. It’s all about who they are and their hearts. A lot of the things that weren’t written in the script, we made them so. Obviously, I didn’t say, ‘I want to be a pansexual faerie,’ but it made sense that all faeries kind of just love who they love.”

While the show may not necessarily tackle this aspect of Delevigne’s character, it will take a fantastical approach to discussing the immigrant experience. “It’s really talking about immigration and refugees and classism and sexism, racism and elitism,” Delevingne explained.

“It’s so current and topical,” Bloom told Variety this weekend at Comic-Con. “It sort of addresses a lot of what we are experiencing today but with the added component of a fantasy period sort of feeling. We can explore these issues that are going on in the world today with a kind of empathy and objective quality that doesn’t feel like it’s banging you over the head.”
