Do we really need a "baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted" version of the 90s classic?

According to Deadline, CBS TV Studios is working on a Clueless TV series, but one that will be very different from both the show and the original ABC TV series it inspired. This new show would center on Dionne, played by Stacey Dash in the original film and series. It would also be more of a mysterious, dark take on the source material.
Deadline describes the new show as “Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video” and a “baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 L.A.?”
The new series would likely move to The CW, which apparently has a “strong interest,” as do other streaming services. CBS TV Studios has already created Netflix hits like Dead to Me, Insatiable, and Unbelievable.
Do we really need a gritty reboot of Clueless? The idea of centering Dionne rather than Cher is certainly interesting, but Clueless is a perfect film, and the Heathers TV show adaptation is a great example of what can go wrong when you try to modernize something that was so singularly of its time. A Clueless series could work if it’s able to capture the Snapchat generation in the same irreverent way the original film did for the Zima generation. And does that seem likely? To quote Cher Horowitz, “ugh, as if.”
